Online MBA in Engineering Management Programs

“Study people. Engineering has a maths bias and an ability to see how organizations work as a system. However, other people won’t have this vision or the ability to see the system, and they may behave in illogical ways. Study how people work together and with technology systems (robotics, software, digital solutions). Learn how people communicate and process information; that will be key to progress.”

Mark Greenhouse, MEng, Owner of Levantar Ltd

Earning an online MBA in engineering management can attract students and professionals seeking an off-campus, remote option for completing coursework. It can put these individuals in line to secure higher-ranking positions in leadership or even enhance one’s salary prospects.

So what do these skilled workers do? Engineering managers are in charge of orchestrating activities among various teams to accomplish specific goals within engineering firms. They may work in office settings, research laboratories, industrial production plants, or construction sites. They can also own their own engineering firm. An MBA in engineering management is designed for problem-solvers who want to enhance their business savviness.

This MBA concentration combines the assets of both engineers and business managers. It may allow more technically focused engineers to transition from management into administration more easily by integrating best practices for human resources and even accounting and product development. Students who obtain an MBA in engineering management can learn how to make informed and successful business decisions that result in better efficiency, performance, and effectiveness in highly technical engineering environments.

In conclusion, many MBA programs in engineering are available both on-campus and online. This guide explores the many benefits of distance-based MBAs in engineering management, outlines some great schools that offer solid programs, and profiles three outstanding faculty members from schools with online engineering MBAs and dual degree programs.

Currently, Greenhouse dedicates his expertise to enhancing organizational leadership and strategies in manufacturing firms. He also educated over 4,000 students through annual Manufacturing Management and Improvement lectures at Leeds University Business School, sharing a treasure trove of industry insights and experiences.

BSchools.org: How has graduating with an advanced degree in engineering management enhanced your career?

Greenhouse: It gave me a wider insight into business operations before even starting. I was given insights into people management (HR management) finance reporting and strategy. The principles of engineering can be applied in many functions risk management, supply chain management, purchasing, and even finance organisations. The maths and systems thinking bias of engineering courses means that many roles are open to graduates in many areas. Problem-solving skills are akin to scientific skills, and problem-solving is a great skill to bring into any workplace.

BSchools.org: What is one piece of advice you would give to a prospective engineering MBA student?

Greenhouse: Study people. Engineering, as I mentioned, has a maths bias and an ability to see systems, interconnections that can amplify, delay, and attenuate. This can be applied to how organizations work as a system.

However, other people won’t have this vision, been trained to see the system, and they may behave in ways that seem illogical. Study how people work together and how they work with technology systems (robotics, software, digital solutions). Learn how people communicate and process information; that will be key to your progress.
