What to Expect from the Case Western Reserve University Online MBA in Healthcare Management

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and have three to five years of professional work experience. GMAT or GRE test scores are required. Waivers may be available to applicants with specific quantitative-heavy degrees with a GPA of 3.0 or higher or who have five or more years of professional work experience with documented quantitative ability. Application materials include an online application and fee, one essay, a current resume, unofficial transcripts, and the names and contact information of two recommenders. All applicants being considered for admission will be invited for an interview. Those who don’t have significant professional work experience should include any internships, or part-time or co-op employment.

Study Plan: Courses run in the fall, spring, and summer, with start dates offered in the fall and spring. The online MBA in healthcare management can be completed in eight semesters, including summers, or a little over 2.5 years. Students complete live online courses with two in-person summer residencies.

Curriculum: The online MBA program comprises 48 credits. The MBA core courses include probability, statistics, and quantitative methods; leadership assessment and development (LEAD); accounting for managers; statistics and decision modeling; managing people and organizations; financial management; economics for managers; managerial marketing; operations management; and strategic issues and applications.

The healthcare core courses include action learning in healthcare (residency); healthcare decision-making; AI in healthcare; economic issues and applications in healthcare; finance issues and applications in healthcare; digital innovation in healthcare; culture in healthcare organizations (residency); lean operations in healthcare systems; regulatory issues in healthcare management; innovation and entrepreneurship in healthcare; and introduction to population health.

Online Experience: Case Western Reserve University utilizes Canvas as its online Learning Management System (LMS). Courses are delivered in real-time virtual sessions, approximately 60 to 90 minutes weekly. These sessions include collaboration with faculty and peers, including live chat, the exchange of feedback and ideas, and questions, answers, and insights.

Students also have access to faculty during office hours, and faculty and peers through live study sessions, discussion boards, and group work. Students complete asynchronous learning modules each week to prepare for the live sessions.

In addition to the online courses, students complete the two summer residencies at area hospitals and clinics, gaining valuable experience in different settings, cultures, and operations. Student services include student success coaches, career services, a vibrant alumni network, library services, and technical support.

On-Site Requirements: Two 3.5-day summer residencies occur at the Cleveland, Ohio campus and in greater Cleveland-area hospitals. All other coursework is online.
