What to Expect from the George Washington University Online MBA
Admission Requirements: Applicants deemed eligible for admission consideration must submit an application using an electronic submission process, a current resume, a statement of purpose of approximately 500 words in length, transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended and one official letter of recommendation. Students concerned that their past academic performance is sufficient to be considered a competitive candidate may wish to contact GWU directly to consult on this topic.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Due to this admissions policy and the program’s competitive nature, it is highly recommended that students submit applications early. The program seeks to create a student body defined by social, ethnic, cultural, and geographical diversity.
State Restrictions: George Washington University accepts applicants residing in other countries. Because all students must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency necessary to fulfill the program’s requirements, international applicants may be expected to demonstrate language proficiency. Applicants who have not completed a post-secondary degree from a U.S. institution must submit a score from an accepted language proficiency test provider. Accepted tests are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE), or the Duolingo English Test. Scores may not be more than two years old.

The average completion time for the program is 2.5 years. The program offers three start dates throughout the year. Students may learn in various ways, including lectures, case discussions, group activities, and short- and long-term study abroad opportunities.
MBA Curriculum: Students complete 46.5 credits consisting of 34.5 credits in required courses and 12 credits of elective courses. Core courses include business essentials for dynamic markets, financial accounting, accounting for internal decision-making, operations management, decision-making and data analysis, finance, competition in the global economy, microeconomics, technology for business in Washington, DC, organizations and human capital, marketing, strategic management, and business ethics and public policy.
In addition, students complete three credit hours by selecting one course from a selection of analytics/technology-focused courses. The 12 credits of elective coursework may be completed from graduate courses numbered 6000 and above, and up to six of these credits can be taken outside GWSB.
Each course consists of guided live classroom sessions featuring a combination of lectures, case discussions and/or group activities. These courses are offered during evenings and weekends. Because these sessions are recorded, students may also access them via digital platforms later. Combining digital and live sessions provides a flexible learning environment that will maximize student participation and learning. Students may also complete short- and long-term study abroad for their degree program.
Online Experience: Recognizing the many demands some working professionals face, GWSB offers an MBA program, not just on-campus but also in the part-time OMBA program. GWU’s network of institutional and other relationships in the DC area allows the school to provide various learning experiences for distance-learning students, including an optional four-day residency course in DC, class projects, digital course materials, live learning opportunities, and co-curricular experiences.
On-Site Requirements: The online MBA program is designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body based in an international city filled with many resources and possibilities.
